FAQ's
Q. What is a FAQ?
A. FAQ is an acronym for "Frequently Asked Question"
Q. What is an acronym?
A. OK, now you're just being silly! Are there any serious questions?
Q. Are you guys crazy? Why are you doing this ride?
A. I guess it's been a dream of ours for quite some time that we decided to make happen. Life is short! There are parts of this great country that we've never seen, and biking seemed like a great way to do that. Besides, if you don't have any dreams, how are you going to have dreams come true?
Q. How long is this going to take?
A. We are planning to start riding from Vancouver on June 2, 2013 and finish up in PEI on July 31, 2013. That means we will need to average approximately 100 km's per day including rest days every week or so.
Q. Isn't it dangerous out there on the highway?
A. "Dangerous" is a relative term. You can drown in the bathtub or get hit walking down the street. We are planning to ride on bike paths (including the Trans Canada Trail) whenever possible.
Q. Why aren't you using a support vehicle?
A. (Ken) Part of the fun is being self sufficient out there on the road. We've never relied on a vehicle for any of our annual rides, so why change now? (Cam) I love the idea that it is just us, our bikes, our bags, and the highway to go from sea to sea... Let's see if I feel the same way on July 31st???
Q. Why aren't you camping along the way?
A. After a long day on the road nothing feels better than a hot shower, a good meal, a dry comfortable bed, and a movie or some other form of entertainment. Camping can't provide most of that, plus it's a lot of additional gear to carry. And who wants to sleep on the ground after riding 110 kms...!?!
Q. Why are you avoiding Northern Ontario?
A. From all the reading we've done this part of the country is remote, hilly and home to lots of bears! (ps - Sorry Brian, but I have to say that you made a valiant effort to convince us to go the Northern route...!)
Q. Why are you stopping your ride in PEI?
A. Going to Newfoundland is a 12 hour overnight ferry ride for only a day or two of additional riding. Logistically it just didn't make sense. Same thing goes for Victoria vs. Vancouver as a starting point. Our goal was to ride from sea to sea, and Horseshoe Bay, BC to Prince Edward Island accomplishes that.
Q. How much is this going to cost?
A. The Accountant (Cam) has created a budget of $6000 per person. The Estimator (Ken) would like to qualify that by saying actual costs will differ and can be significantly affected by changes in the scope, sequence and external environment, the manner in which the ride is implemented and other factors which impact the basis upon which the initial budget was prepared. The Accountant (Cam) still says $6000...
Q. Are you raising money for some worthy organization?
A. Our cross-Canada adventure was originally born as a co-dream of Ken and Cam, and was not intended to be a fundraiser. However, when we began to realize that we might draw a lot of viewers to our website, we decided to provide an opportunity for followers to support "El Jordan", a training, teaching and resource centre in Santa Cruz Bolivia focused on the "street people" of Santa Cruz, Bolivia. Cam has been to Bolivia a couple of times to work with El Jordan and has seen first hand the amazing work that they are doing. See the Donate page for more details.
Q. Do you have an Emergency Logistics Coordinator?
A. Excellent question! The amazing Joanne (JoJo) L. has agreed to fill this role. Operating from her home base in Calgary, her responsibilites may include obtaining the online blueprints of buildings, tracking down the last known locations, credit history and banking activity of shady characters, tapping "inside" sources for sensitive information, or maybe just finding us a bike part.
Q. Did you pack enough socks and underwear?
A. Mom, is that you?
